As I sip my coffee this morning, I remember how much the iconic Mary Tyler Moore meant to us, those of us coming up in the 60s and 70s.  The Mary Tyler Moore show was a must-watch, and I even purchased DVDs of some of the seasons after the show ended.

She showed us the challenges in the workplace, how to navigate dating life with humor, and how to enjoy the friendships of other women.

Last night, in two memorial shows, we were reminded of her body of work, and how her presence on the two most famous TV shows—The Dick VanDyke show and The Mary Tyler Moore show—was only a piece of who she was.

I’ve seen her in a few movies, the most notable being her portrayal of the cold mother in Ordinary People.  Remember that one?

  4. Every Saturday night. And when I was even younger I loved her in The Dick Van Dyke Show. In addition to her fine comedic acting abilities she also served as an inspiration to my youngest daughter who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at six year old (she’s now 30). Several years after diagnosis she ‘discovered’ MTM and was so grateful to see someone living with the disease but not letting it define her. She was a bright light, for sure.

    1. Thanks, Mary, I am glad to hear how much she meant to your daughter…MTM was definitely an inspiration to women, girls, and people in so many ways.

      We had to stay home to watch the show, too, since we didn’t have VCRs or DVRs back then. Imagine that!

      Last night I watched the 20/20 tribute. It was amazing. Now I want to watch my DVDs again, and I have a movie, probably not a hit movie, from back in the early 2000s, called Just Between Friends, with Mary and Christine Lahti…and a husband who dies. Then, of course, there is Ordinary People.

  5. Coming in a little late, but we heard of her passing too. She was an icon for me as well on Screen. On our TV’s ( and we only got them here in early ’60’s) too, I loved the Dick Van Dyke show and Mary Tyler Moore show as well. Would always watch. I had forgotten she was in Ordinary People but actually bought that DVD last year as I loved the book and the movie as well. She had a lot of suffering but brought much pleasure and great role model for women taking their place in her work field.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Kathryn, and I totally agree with your thoughts on MTM. Looking back, I realize we had to be very big fans to watch all the time…since back then, there were no VCRs or DVRs…and we had to actually stay home to watch!

  6. Oh yes, her show was much fun. Always butting heads with Lou Grant. And Ordinary People was an intense & great film. She played a character so unlike her comedic one. She will be missed. I’m sorry I missed the tribute show to her. I hope they replay it.

      I don’t think I’ve enjoyed another show since in quite the same way as the MTM show. Perhaps because it was a groundbreaking show for the times.
