WEEKLY UPDATES: SLEEPLESS ON A SATURDAY, ETC.

Good morning! Today’s post will link up to The Sunday Salon, The Sunday Post and Stacking the Shelves, for weekly updates.

**Mailbox Monday is hosted at the home site: Mailbox Monday.

And let’s join Kathryn, our leader in It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?, at Book Date.

Here I am at 4:13 a.m…. and SLEEPLESS ON SATURDAY.  Yes, I had to take a jab at that “Sleepless in Seattle” movie title, one of my favorite Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan flicks.  Why am I wide awake when I should still be curled up in my bed?  I am not quite sure, but I suspect that my thoughts are still caught up in recent political events that are disturbing to me…and upcoming primary elections that might (hopefully) right some of the wrongs.  I have a growing file here on my desk with primary election information and my official ballot that recently arrived in my mailbox.  So...instead of tossing and turning, I am writing this post about my week and the great books I enjoyed.

I actually read three books again this week, all of which were really awesome.  My mailbox was overflowing with new books (both physical and one NetGalley ARC), and I downloaded some purchases, too.

In the residence, our dining room table is overflowing with people who want to join us.  Why?  I suspect that our chatter and laughter are a draw.  Good, right?  We have had some lively conversations, not always agreeable, but there is nothing passive about us, that’s for sure.  I am reminded (almost) of the days in the university student union.  Hmm.

Anyway…let’s grab some coffee and take a closer look at the week.

Shay Miller wants to find love, but it eludes her. She wants to be fulfilled, but her job is a dead end. She wants to belong, but her life is increasingly lonely.

Until Shay meets the Moore sisters. Cassandra and Jane live a life of glamorous perfection, and always get what they desire. When they invite Shay into their circle, everything seems to get better.

Shay would die for them to like her.
She may have to.

  1. Sounds as if you had a good week. I have just returned this day after Valentine’s from lunch at a little French restaurant and some retail therapy, aka shopping, with a young friend. We looked in at the Funky Monkey (gift shop); the Scrap Shack (scrapbooking and all things paper); a bead shop that offers “projects” instruction; Paint with a Twist which we have attended once before and a kid’s craft shop that will take on adults for instructions on personal projectors. We decided we are ready to “get crafty.
I have papers to look at before Tuesday and a Sunday school lesson to prepare for tomorrow, but I’m flat worn out. That’s what I get for hanging out with younger people! LOL
Here’s hoping you have a good week ahead. You certainly are going to be doing some good reading!

  2. Your dining room conversations sound like keepers! It’s always good when you can have lively discussions like that, even if not everyone agrees. And ugh I hate it when I can’t sleep like that. I hear you, recent political events are enough to keep anyone up! Crazy right now.

I love the look of Don’t Look For Me.

  3. Beware Of The Reader

Well Laurel I also was Sleepless on Saturday as you can read in my post today! Only …I paid with a migraine today. But what happened (again) in the political sphere your side of the ocean? I confess that I avoided the news these last days so please, enlighten me!

    1. Thanks, Sophie, and here the Senate refused to hear witnesses in Trump’s Impeachment Trial and voted to acquit…which means he continues to get away with everything he does. Same old same old, in other words.

Books are a great release!! Enjoy yours. Sorry about that migraine.

  4. Glad you are having stimulating conversations over meals – it’s one of the things that I always appreciate. Sorry about the sleepless bit – and I completely understand why you’d be tossing and turning, given the sorry state of things right now. We’re in a similarly dire position here in the UK… I tend to put the light on and read, rather than lie there and stew in the dark when I’m struggling with too much fury and not enough sleep… Love the look of your yummy pudding, Laurel – may you have more of those and plenty of fabulous books to read:))

I’m sorry you’re losing sleep! Life can be hard at times. I’m glad you’re having lots of distractions though. And those books look great.
Have a great week and happy reading.

I hate those sleepless nights and I can’t turn in my Kindle – too bright, When that happens, I keep earphones with an audio download ready for access; it really helps me fall back to sleep.

  7. Like that your table is the table everyone wants to join. Lively discussion sounds good. Sorry about the 4:15 am awakening. I do often wake about that time but drift off again with luck. This morning I had a weird dream about forgetting where I parked my car and being in total unfamiliar territory and not being able to get back to the car so that I could pick up my sister to take her to apt! I do have to take her to an apt today. The machinations of the sub conscious!

  8. When I can’t sleep, I’d rather get up and do something productive too rather than lie there trying to sleep so I don’t blame you for getting some blogging done!

I like the idea of having a chatty, lively, table for others to join… Keeps the conversation interesting! 🙂

Hope you have a good week!

  9. ooo dessert looks good! We got gluten-free chocolate cupcakes with pink frosting for Valentine’s Day. And I had baked chocolate chip cookies at some point this week.

I am also disturbed by the partisan politics these days.

You read some great books and have some more coming up! Enjoy!

  10. Hallo, Hallo Laurel,

I can *definitely!* relate to you – especially in regards to the worrisome current events (as that is partially what derailed my readings in January – that combined with the horrid news about the Australian bushfires; soul crushing start to a New Year!) – whilst I am also a night owl blogger – many a nights I’m reading, blogging and/or tweeting well into the hours where everyone else has gone to bed! lol Its like you said – sometimes you just have this extra energy and/or you need the distraction – or other times, I just feel more akin to reading and blogging during those earlier hours in the mornings!

I have the chance to listen to “You Are Not Alone” via LibroFM’s ALC programme – but part of me worried it was a bit out of my depth in regards to the places it might take me. I took a pass on it – I was curious as you’re reading it now – is it like any other books I might have heard of? I thought it was a Contemporary Thriller but part of me thought it might be more like “Gone Girl” or “The Girl on the Train” than say a J.S. Monroe novel.

I talk about the audiobooks I did select for February on my #TheSundayPost today. Now I’m off to read your reviews which you’ve happily linked!!

    1. Thanks, Jorie, I am enjoying You Are Not Alone, but haven’t yet figured out the motivation of the women that are “messing with” the main character. At halfway through the story, she doesn’t yet realize she is being played.

Enjoy your week and your books..and any night time blogging and reading.

  11. I hope sleep comes easier for you this week. I understands how all this can keep one awake!

I have been staying up so late recently that I’ve nearly seen 4:13 AM from the other side. I guess staying up as late as I want is a benefit of retirement. It does mess u the next day or two though. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

My husband and I need to sit down and vote soon. We have our mail in ballots too. I want to be hopeful about the November election, but I find it hard to be. It’ll be interesting to see how the primaries turn out at least. I am glad you had such a great reading week this past week. I hope this one will be just as wonderful for you. Enjoy your new books!

    1. Thanks, Wendy, I have never been more depressed about our country and the prospects of what might come next! The dark cloud that hangs over us right now seems to get darker…but I definitely want to have hope that things will change in November.

Meanwhile, my books are helping me keep good feelings in my life. Enjoy yours.
