Welcome to another Coffee Chat, in which we share bookish and not so bookish thoughts. Head on over to Bookishly Boisterous to add your link.
Another week is near its end, and the month is half over. How did that happen? I did go to the neighborhood Edward’s Theater on the weekend and saw On the Basis of Sex. I loved it! Since I went to the first showing of the day (a matinee, of course), the crowd felt like “my people,” in terms of age and other demographics, and at the end of the show, there was clapping and cheering. My vow last weekend was to steer clear of negativity, as much as possible, and seeing that movie went a long way in that direction.
- This week I have been reading “feel good” books that had been hiding out on Paige, my Kindle. I need to stop avoiding books like that in favor of the fast-paced thrillers …as those that are “comfort food for my soul” can also help keep the darkness at bay. I read Those Other Women, by Nicola Moriarty (click for my review). And today I finished By the Book, by Julia Sonneborn (click to read my review).
- Sometimes I feel uplifted just by looking at photos of family I only see on Facebook, like these step-great-grandchildren celebrating their Christmas in North Dakota. They are Maddix, Lilly, and Bella…and new baby Molly.
- I am looking forward to Season 5 of Grace and Frankie, available on Netflix on Friday!
- I am reading a new book that I’ve heard really good things about: The Red Address Book, by Sofia Lundberg, follows 96-year-old Doris, who writes down the memories of her eventful life as she pages through her decades-old address book. But the most profound moment of her life is still to come…
- Before last weekend’s movie, I went to Yard House to use one of my Christmas gift cards…and had these goodies: Chicken Tortilla soup…and Creme Brulee…
- Tonight I will try to find something on Amazon Prime to watch. I’ve already seen everything on my DVR.

How has your week worked out for you? Reading, movies, adventures?

I love that photo of your step-great-grandchildren! I can see how that would bring you joy. In fact, I think it would bring anyone joy so thank you for sharing it with us 😁 Books are great for lifting one’s mood and providing a break from other things going on in the world. We all need that at the moment seemingly. Over here in the UK we have got ourselves in a right old muddle following the country’s decision to leave the European Union.

Thanks, Cathy, I love that we do have some control in our lives, despite the chaos in our countries and the world. Our reactions to events are under our control, and while we don’t want to be “ostriches” about things, we can change our focus. Choose to live each day enjoying light and lovely things.
Let’s do that! Hang in there.

You are doing a great job of keeping the darkness away…but sometimes I feel that no matter what…January is always a long cold month…especially here. We are going to experience really low temps and snow tonight so my thoughts go to warm and comforting soups and fireplaces in front of the TV!

Thanks for visiting, Patty, and despite rainy, snowy and cold days, we can turn our thoughts to comforting things, like books and enjoying soups and warmth in our homes. Thankfully we still have those things!

I read somewhere that’s why we should have good photos around us – they give positive energy. The Red Address Book is one I have on reserve at the library, look forward to what you think.

Thanks, Nise, I finished half of Season 5 of Grace and Frankie, and I am loving it. It always cheers me up, especially when Grace and Frankie outwit those awful adult children! LOL

I’m glad you have been successful at avoiding negativity and feeding your soul. I’ve been trying to do that too. The picture of the kids with santa is definitely adorable and a sure thing for a smile. I’m excited about Grace and Frankie too!

Thanks for visiting, Erin; I watched half of Grace & Frankie’s Season 5 last night. I’ll see the rest of it tonight or tomorrow. I should probably slow it down a little, since once I’m done I’ll be clamoring for more. LOL.
Avoiding negativity is quite a challenge…even in online communities. I had to remove myself from some FB groups, as even the soap opera lovers were getting vicious. I think the harshness and meanness is in the air…coming from the world around us.
Enjoy your weekend.
