MY INTERIOR WORLD: UNDER SCRUTINY

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Good morning!  It is Friday already, but I feel as though I have missed the week.

Probably because, for the most part, I have.  Felled by some kind of food poisoning, or at the least, a severe food reaction, I have been sicker this week than I have been for a very long time.

My daughter had the exact same symptoms, so we’re thinking it was that cheesecake we had on Sunday.  This very unique “purge” began on Monday.  LOL

This was definitely not the kind of purge I like to celebrate!  But as I was sidelined on the couch, not blogging and only occasionally reading, I had a chance to study my interiors…the ones that surround me, not my “gut.”

And I saw that the way I display some of my collections was tiring me out, just looking at them, with the dust seemingly accumulating around them.  And their presence made it harder to dust, too, since there were so many little items.

Cute items, admittedly, but on the first day that I felt somewhat better (yesterday), I packed up some of those little angels that formerly lived on the table you see above….and off they went to a see-through bin in the garage.

I am now reveling in how good the top of that table looks with fewer items on it…and Heather, this does not mean you were right, and I was wrong!  (A little mother-daughter disagreement).  But I have CHOSEN to declutter just a little bit more.

Some of you probably know where this will lead….there will be more scrutiny from me, as I study every room in my house, wondering what to attack next.  Could it be this sofa table?  I have to admit to feeling a little angst as I study this one…I am so fond of the geese…and the little tidbits here and there….but let’s be reasonable.

So let’s take a look at the same sofa table (below), with fewer things on it…..Wow, it didn’t even hurt to remove those odds and ends.

Now I know that I’m done for today, and as for more of this kind of purging… Like Scarlett, I’ll think about it tomorrow….

Do you ever take another look at your interiors when you are flat on your back, sick, and not able to move around much?  Do you see things differently?

I am going to share this post for Saturday Snapshot, too, hosted by Metro Mommy Reads.  Check in to see what others are sharing.

Glad you’re feeling better! I definitely have minimal decorations in my house, simply for the fact that I hate to dust it all! Mostly just picture frames, wish some decor on the mantel. Less is better for me, especially so I don’t spend too much time cleaning every week. 🙂

  2. Gastro is terrible. I certainly hope it wasn’t the cheesecake (I wouldn’t want to think that cheesecake made me sick). Glad you’re on the mend though, and feeling well enough to declutter some more- minimalism always does look better.

    1. Oh, I know, Louise….that would mean I could never have it again! Thanks for stopping by, and it startled me so much, as I haven’t had this kind of illness in years…knock wood. I should have knocked the wood harder, huh? As for minimalism…I am taking it one step at a time. First the excess books, then a few of the little figurines…who knows what will be next?

  3. I hope you are feeling better soon. I’m glad you have a sense of humor about it. Yes – I work on de-cluttering too. Sometimes less is more. But, I don’t have a very good decorating sense. Also, I don’t like to dust so I try to keep things minimal. Have a great week. Your photos look great.

    1. Thanks, Pat, and without laughing at ourselves, where would we be? LOL

Enjoy your weekend, and I’m glad you could stop by. I hope we all arrange our interiors to please us, as well as make our lives work better.

  4. I’m glad you’re feeling better, Laurel.
I’ve been decluttering the past couple of years but there’s much more to do. A little at a time is easier for me and I always feel better after doing it. I think one has to be in the right frame of mind to do it though.

Having downsized I have done a lot of decluttering. I do often contemplate and rearrange my stuff . I prefer to only display what brings me pleasure. I no longer feel guilty getting rid of knick knacks from days gone by. Tastes change.

    1. Thanks, Jackie, and clinging to sentimental objects can lead to more work when we have to dust….and then if there is another move in the future, the thought of packing everything gives me the shivers…LOL.

The older I get, the more I discard. I cleared out six floor-to-ceiling bookshelves a few years ago, and I haven’t missed anything. Much less clutter, too.

So sorry to hear you were sick.

    1. I think the task will be endless for me, Deb, but each step of the way, I do feel lighter. Thanks for stopping by, and congrats on clearing those bookshelves. And thanks for the well wishes…I am glad to be recovering.

  7. I’m sorry to hear you’ve been feeling bad. Glad that’s over with! I’m recovering from a respiratory thing that’s been going around. While I was coughing and sneezing, all I did was read and nap.
Congratulations on your continuing decluttering project. About your before-and-after photos: I will say that the objects in the second photo stand out more than the ones in the first one. Maybe because there are fewer items, it’s easier to focus on each one. I have a friend who rotates her displays, spotlighting only a few items at a time.

    1. Thanks! I can see that everything stands out more in the second photo, and yes, I was rotating things for a while, but still had too many things out…LOL. I have giant shelves in the garage filled with those see-through bins. What to do with them? That will be another project.

      Thanks for stopping by, Sandra.

  8. Glad you are feeling well enough to declutter some spaces; I have the same problem. I love the items I have but don’t necessarily have them displayed to the best effect. However I have limited space and funds for new furniture to display them, lol. Everytime I move I donate odds and ends to thrift shops, but then I start replenishing with new, sigh…

    1. Ha-ha…yes, the ongoing quest to fill up empty spaces…or to use the things we love. Thanks, Rita, I’m glad to feel better too. I am still a little paranoid about the yukky stuff returning….but I think it’s over, knock wood.

  9. Glad you are feeling better. Sometimes it helps to look at our surrounding with a different eye. I have a bit less sitting around now, due to weekly visits by a very inquisitive 20 month old great grandson. Easier to quickly “put up” less stuff. haha!

    1. Thanks, Judy, and yes, when my kids (and then the grandkids) were young, I had fewer things out…much easier. And then I let myself go as the need to protect things from curious hands lessened. But now my motivation is to make housecleaning easier!
