MONDAY FROM THE INTERIOR: MAILBOX MONDAY & WHAT ARE YOU READING? — AUGUST 20

Good morning, and welcome to another Monday, in which we celebrate our reading, blogging, and life.  Mailbox Monday is hosted in August by 5 Minutes for Books; and Book Journey brings us another edition of What Are You Reading?

MAILBOX MONDAY:

This week was an almost empty mailbox week, with just one review book in the box.

Against My Will, by Benjamin Berkley, arrived from Henry Holt & Co.

Danielle Landau knows she should feel lucky, but she can’t feel anything but dread. Not only did she pass the New York Bar, but she married the man her father says is just right for her and lives in a fashionable new loft in Queens. But the man who seems like the perfect catch is a perfect nightmare at home. Jacob tries to control her career, her daily routine, and even what she eats. He ignores her desires and belittles her every chance he gets. Soon, Danielle doesn’t recognize her husband or herself, and she struggles to find a way out.

As we follow Danielle on her journey of terror and recovery, we see her story intersect with the diary entries of a young girl from more than fifty years ago, and the full weight of the family’s secrets becomes clear. This is a story of survival, self-discovery, justice, and ultimately about love.

  1. Great week of reading! I also enjoyed Drowning Ruth and I’ve been meaning to pick up Small Damages (one of these days!) I read Wonderful Tonight a few years back. It’s a goody!

    • Yes, I have had Wonderful Tonight for a few years (and Drowning Ruth) ..they were on my diminishing Old TBR Mountain (finally diminishing!). Thanks for stopping by, Jennifer, and have a great week.

  2. Enjoy your books. They are all new to me.

I had a fantastic week of reading so it’s really difficult to pick a favorite book. I’m going to have go with a fan girl response and say the best (out of an extremely good set of books) was The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There by Catherynne M. Valente. Please come and see what else I’m reading.

  3. I can’t wait to read The Language Of Sisters, I love Amy Hatvany’s writing. I’ll wait on your thoughts on Against My Will, not sure I can read another after Little Night. Have a great week and happy reading 🙂

  4. Hi Laurel-Rain,

Your new books this week ‘Against My Will’, sounds like a powerful and emotional story. I almost thought that it was a memoir, so forceful was the synopsis, but discovering that it is indeed a novel makes it a definite for my wishlist.

    Thanks for highlighting this one,

    Yvonne

    • The Wrong Mother was my first Sophie Hannah, and I’ve been a fan ever since. I like how she has recurring detective characters…and her twists and turns leave me gasping. Thanks for visiting, Jess, and enjoy!

  5. The Other Woman’s House sounds good to me! I am reading The Last Refuge by Ben Coes. I have not read the other books in the series but I stayed up reading last night until I just couldn’t keep my eyes open any longer. So good, will finish it today.

    Have a great week!
