MONDAY MEMES: MAILBOX & WHAT ARE YOU READING? — JAN. 3

MONDAY MEMES

Good morning, and welcome to our first Monday Memes in 2011.  Mailbox Monday is hosted for January at Rose City Reader; What Are You Reading? is hosted by Book Journey.

MAILBOX MONDAY:

I got really lucky this week, with two books from Amazon Vine; one from a publisher; and then I bought one print book and 3 e-books (Yay, new Kindle!).

Here’s My Mailbox:

1)  1022 Evergreen Place, by Debbie Macomber (Vine)

Here’s a tidbit from Amazon:

Dear Reader,

Guess what? I’m falling in love! With Mack McAfee.

My baby daughter, Noelle, and I have been living next door to Mack since the spring. I’m still a little wary about our relationship, because I haven’t always made good decisions when it comes to men. My baby’s father, David Rhodes, is testament to that. I’m so worried he might sue for custody….

2)  My Formerly Hot Life, by Stephanie Dolgoff (Vine)

On the inside flap:

Rocked by the realization that she’s no longer considered young—no longer ogled, marketed cool things, nor “in the know”—a fabulously funny forty-something examines her “adult between” years (30-45) and discovers that they are even better than being 21!

3)  Reading Women, by Stephanie Staal (From Publisher)

On Amazon:

When Stephanie Staal first read The Feminine Mystique in college, she found it “a mildly interesting relic from another era.” But more than a decade later, as a married stay-at-home mom in the suburbs, Staal rediscovered Betty Friedan’s classic work—and was surprised how much she identified with the laments and misgivings of 1950s housewives. She set out on a quest: to reenroll at Barnard and re-read the great books she had first encountered as an undergrad….

4)  Mini Shopaholic, by Sophie Kinsella (sale at B & N!)

Here’s a tease from Amazon:

The follow-up to Kinsella’s Shopaholic & Baby (2007) finds Becky and Luke Brandon’s daughter, Minnie, hitting the terrible twos. More than a handful for Becky, Minnie is already picking up on some of her mother’s bad habits, particularly when it comes to shopping. With frequent cries of “Miiiiine!” Minnie is the embodiment of the voice in Becky’s head that won’t let her say no to bargain buys and designer clothes….

5)  Half Broke Horses, by Jeannette Walls (Purchased e-book)

A Snippet:

For the first 10 years of her life, Lily Casey Smith, the narrator of this true-life novel by her granddaughter, Walls, lived in a dirt dugout in west Texas. Walls, whose megaselling memoir, The Glass Castle, recalled her own upbringing, writes in what she recalls as Lily’s plainspoken voice, whose recital provides plenty of drama and suspense as she ricochets from one challenge to another….

6)  Repairing Rainbows, by Linda Fishman (Purchased e-book)

From Amazon:

At thirteen years old, Lynda’s life comes to a disastrous halt when her mother and two younger sisters are killed in a plane crash. Her father, overcome by despair, simply continues to exist, in a state devoid of hope. After burying a wife and two young children at the age of 44, the overwhelming responsibility of raising a daughter alone completely immobilizes him.

Teetering on that tender brink between childhood and adolescence, Lynda faces the responsibility of a father in a complete state of shock, a house to take care of and hundreds of decisions about how to proceed with their shattered lives….

7)  Lancelot’s Lady, by Cherish D’Angelo (Purchased e-book)

A blurb on Amazon:

A Bahamas holiday from dying billionaire JT Lance, a man with a dark secret, leads palliative nurse Rhianna McLeod to Jonathan, a man with his own troubled past, and Rhianna finds herself drawn to the handsome recluse, while unbeknownst to her, someone with a horrific plan is hunting her down….

Wow!  This is an unprecedented total of books for me!

WHAT ARE YOU READING?

This week has been the last week of the year 2010, so my blogging adventures were full of plans, challenges, resolutions, etc.  You can read about it all at my Sunday Salon post.

Reading Week – Click Titles for Reviews:

1)  Letting Go, by Nancy Kaiser

2)  Rescue, by Anita Shreve (e-book)

3)  The Pursuit of Alice Thrift, by Elinor Lipman

4)  The Wedding, by Nicholas Sparks

Now for the books on this week’s stack.

Up Next:

1)  Safe Haven, by Nicholas Sparks (e-book)

A snippet:

When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past….

2)  Free Fall, by Fern Michaels (from my TBR stacks!)

Tidbit on Amazon:

Bestseller Michaels’s Sisterhood series (Vendetta, etc.) goes out with a bang and a wink as the Virginia vigilantes—Myra, Kathryn, Alexis, Isabelle, Nikki and Anna—seek justice for Yoko Akia, a young florist. Yoko wants to punish her father, who bought, impregnated and discarded her teenage mother, who died after giving birth to her. The lethal ladies are shocked to discover Yoko’s dad is none other than Michael Lyons, an award-winning film star with another nasty secret: he’s been buying and selling Asian women as sex slaves to prominent businessmen….

3)  Sunday at Tiffany’s, by James Patterson (from my TBR stacks!)

A lonely girl creates an imaginary friend who disappears when she is still very young; he reappears mysteriously years later, with surprising results….

Now I’m very excited about this new week, full of books; also, stretching ahead is the whole new year with its challenges and adventures.

What adventures are you exploring this week?  I hope you’ll stop by and share….

After reading “Reading Women” you should check out Stephanie Coontz’s new book “A Strange Stirring – The Feminine Mystique and American Women at the Dawn of the 1960’s”. This book looks at women’s changing status from the 1920s through the 1950s, compares the dilemmas of working-class and middle-class women, white and black, in the early 1960s, and illuminates the new mystiques and new possibilities facing men and women today. I just got it and so far it’s great.

    1. That sounds like an excellent idea, Alex. Thanks for sharing and for visiting. That time period would take me back to my college days and the resurgence of feminism that sprang up after The Feminine Mystique came out. In the early seventies, Gloria Steinem spoke at the university I was attending. We all wore ERA bracelets a couple of years later.

    1. Ah, yes, Novroz, I am obsessively-compulsive about changing my blogs. So far, I haven’t changed the theme in at least two weeks! LOL

Thanks for stopping by. And I’m really excited about Mini Shopaholic.

    1. Oh, a Just for Fun Challenge sounds fabulous, Jan. I’ll have to check that out…oh, wait a minute! I already signed up for five challenges, and I said I would do better this year…LOL.

      Thanks for stopping by.

  2. I actually have Walls’ book on my TBR shelf and now am eagerly looking forward to your review of that D’ange book (I have a very guilty pleasure in enjoying covers like that) as well as Patterson’s. Very interesting selections this week! I’m currently reading “Practical Magic” by Alice Hoffman and will probably try and read “The Satanic Verses” again afterward (as in TRY again, since I have yet to get through it). Have a great day, Laurel-Rain!

    1. Thanks, Kimberly, and I’m glad you stopped by. The intriguing thing (to me) about Cherish D’Angelo’s book is that I’ve read another of hers under her “real name” of Cheryl Tardiff. Whale Song was fabulous, so I’m looking forward to this change in genre and name to see what that’s like.

I read Walls’ The Glass Castle, and loved it. I’m curious about this one with a different “voice.”

    1. I’m excited about Lancelot’s Lady, too…I hadn’t read Sparks until this week. I was pleasantly surprised.

Macomber I’ve read, and while I enjoy them, I wouldn’t want a steady diet of them. Spaced out is a good thing.

Thanks for stopping by, Lady Q.

  4. Great mailbox! I have been wanting to get my hands on Safe Haven but have been trying to hold off until I get myself caught up on some other books. Not sure if I will go with the e-book though since my mom likes Nicholas Sparks too. I like to share his books with her. I’ll watch for your review of it. I hear it is a bit different than his usual books.

    1. Ah, yes, Beth…that’s the downside to the Kindle (or Nook, or whatever). Unless they come up with a way to share…but then, the other person would have to have an e-reader, too.

      Thanks for stopping by.

  5. I didn’t know about Debbie Macomber’s Evergreen Place. I love the Cedar Cove series. Is this book part of that series? I haven’t read Safe Haven or The Wedding. I’m thinking about trading out of one challenge to join the Nicholas Sparks challenge. I just can’t resist his charms. I mean his good writing.::)) I’m back at blogspot. I can’t catch on quick enough at Word Press for the present time.

    1. Oh, my, Tea…you are shifting back and forth, aren’t you? Perhaps that’s a sign that you’re not completely sold on the WP experience.

I hope you enjoy the Sparks books…and yes, this Macomber one is part of the Cedar Cove series. Thanks for stopping by.

    1. That’s right, Wendi…Seattle! I LOVE Seattle, BTW. I’ve visited there about three times, and every time, I want to move there.

I saw Debbie Macomber at BEA in 2008 (in LA), but didn’t get to go into her line because I was signing my book (Chasing Stardust) at the same time.

But I was reading Twenty Wishes during that event (at night!).

Thanks for stopping by, and yes, I do love the Vine program.
