MONDAY MEMES: MAILBOX & WHAT ARE YOU READING? — DEC. 27

Welcome to our Monday Memes:  Mailbox Monday, hosted this month by Let Them Read Books; and What Are You Reading?, hosted by Book Journey.

This has been a wonderful holiday season, and I am grateful for the moments with family and friends.  Check out my Sunday Salon post, to find our more about my week.

Monday Mailbox:

Nothing came in the mail this week, but I bought one book at Barnes & Noble, and ordered 2 e-books for my brand new Kindle!

1)  I Remember Nothing, by Nora Epron (a print book)

Nora Ephron’s newest book takes a cool, hard, hilarious look at the past, the present, and the future, and recalling with her signature clarity and wisdom everything she hasn’t (yet) forgotten.

2)  Safe Haven, by Nicholas Sparks (my first e-book!)

A blurb on Amazon:

When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family.

But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her . . . a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo’s empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards . . . and that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven.

3)  Rescue, by Anita Shreve (my second e-book)

A Snippet from Amazon:

Paramedic Pete Webster is worried sick about his daughter, Rowan, a high-school senior whom he has raised single-handedly ever since she was two. Rowan has adopted very untypical behavior, ignoring her studies and drinking heavily. It brings back bad memories of his ex-wife, Sheila. He pulled her from a car wreck while on the job and soon fell madly in love with her both for her beauty and her irreverent sense of humor. When she became pregnant, he married her though he was only 21. They were very happy until Sheila began drinking all day, every day. Now Pete is worried that their daughter believes she is doomed to repeat her mother’s mistakes; he decides to contact Sheila, whom he has not seen or heard from for 16 years. The prolific Shreve brings her customary care to this thoroughly absorbing, perfectly paced domestic drama. Alternating between the life-and-death scenarios Pete encounters on the job and the fraught family tension between father and daughter, Shreve pulls readers right into her story….

So that’s it for my Mailbox this week.

What Are You Reading?

Here’s what last week’s reading looks like….(Click titles for reviews)

1)  The Other Family, by Joanna Trollope

2)  Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas, by James Patterson

3)  My Lost Daughter, by Nancy Taylor Rosenberg

4)  Room for Love, by Andrea Meyer

What’s Up Next?

1)  Letting Go, by Nancy Kaiser, a book that has been on my TBRs for awhile…

Here’s a tidbit:

LETTING GO is the extraordinary story of a woman who retires with her husband to the mountains of North Carolina to build their dream retirement home. Just as she embarks on this fabulous new chapter in her life, her husband confesses, “I never wanted any of this… .” Follow her struggle to learn from and let go of the devastating feelings of betrayal, grief, anger, fear, and loneliness that engulf her after they separate and divorce….

2)  The Pursuit of Alice Thrift, by Elinor Lipman

Whimsical, heartwarming, and engaging, Lipman tells the tale of the maladroit, socially inept, and very appealing Alice Thrift. Alice, an intern in a Boston hospital, hopes to one day perform plastic surgery on the poor and disenfranchised.

3)  Rescue, by Anita Shreve (I know, I just got it, but I’m dying to use my Kindle!)

So that’s it for this week.  I have also been busily planning challenges; so far, I have signed up for four reading challenges, and another writing challenge.

What are you reading and doing this week?  I hope you’ll stop by, and I also hope you’ve had a wonderful Christmas.

  1. I want a Kindle! Or a Nook! 🙂 ….I just have all of these great eBooks that I’m dawdling over since I dislike reading books in front of the PC (I spend far too much time here as it is!) … you got some great books for yourself, though! I’m off to read your reviews!

    1. Me, too, Crystal…unexpected surprise, I mean. LOL

There was no way that I would have guessed it; and since it came from my daughter, who doesn’t love reading like I do, I certainly was thrown. Pleasantly, though.

Hope you have a great week, too. I’m going to try to stifle the urge to fill it up with e-books…LOL

      1. Mine came from my Grandma, who doesn’t really read or know that I love reading either. It was disguised in a clothing box, so I thought it was going to be a sweater!

I am currently avoiding the urge to buy a ton of books for it myself 😉 I do love the free section on Amazon, though!

    1. Yes, Mystica, I am excited about it. I hope to start reading it today, along with the Letting Go book.

Usually I enjoy Shreve’s books, but some are better than others. Thanks for stopping by, and have a great week.

    1. Sheila, once I’d gotten it charged, connected, registered…then I was excited. The first tedious part made me nervous, like, is it going to work? Will I be able to do it?

The buying part was incredibly easy…naturally!

Thanks for stopping by, and I agree about Suzanne’s Diary…I saw the movie first, awhile ago, but even so, I sobbed. And then I’d forgotten about that surprise tidbit at the end, and sobbed again!

    1. Oh, I know, Samita…I signed up for the Nicholas Sparks challenge, because, until now, I’d mainly seen the movies. And I do have one of the books on my stacks, so adding Safe Haven on the e-reader will satisfy the “first date” aspect of the challenge.

      Thanks for stopping by.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Teddyree. I was a little nervous about setting it up, wondering if I would encounter any problems…but then, everything fell into place. I have the two books on it, but haven’t started reading yet.

I hope I like it too!

    1. You’re welcome, Lady Q., and thanks for stopping by. I think I’m going to start Rescue today. I have started Letting Go, but it’s the kind of book I can read along with another one.

      Enjoy your week.

  2. I just finished reading Rescue. It was good. I liked some of her other books better but that’s the subject matter not her writing, which I enjoy.

I haven’t read any Sparks books although I have a few I picked up for a dollar at the library sale… eventually I’ll get to them!

    1. I’ve had The Wedding, by Nicholas Sparks, on my TBR piles for awhile. I signed up for a Sparks challenge, so I can read that one and Safe Haven.

Thanks for stopping by, Leslie…glad you liked Rescue, as I’m starting it today.

  3. I received for review The Elephant Keeper by Christopher Nicholson from Tribute Books Reviews & Giveaways.

“I asked the sailor what an Elephant looked like; he replied that it was like nothing on earth.”

England, 1766: After a long voyage from the East Indies, a ship docks in Bristol, England, and rumor quickly spreads about its unusual cargo—some say a mermaid is on board. A crowd forms, hoping to catch a glimpse of the magical creature. One crate after another is unpacked: a zebra, a leopard, and a baboon. There’s no mermaid, but in the final two crates is something almost as magical—a pair of young elephants, in poor health but alive.

Seeing a unique opportunity, a wealthy sugar merchant purchases the elephants for his country estate and turns their care over to a young stable boy, Tom Page. Tom’s family has long cared for horses, but an elephant is something different altogether. It takes time for Tom and the elephants to understand one another, but to the surprise of everyone on the estate, a remarkable bond is formed.

The Elephant Keeper, the story of Tom and the elephants, in Tom’s own words, moves from the green fields and woods of the English countryside to the dark streets and alleys of late-eighteenth-century London, reflecting both the beauty and the violence of the age. Nicholson’s lush writing and deft storytelling complement a captivating tale of love and loyalty between one man and the two elephants that change the lives of all who meet them.

  4. Congrats on your Kindle.Santa surprised me with a Nook. I almost bought Safe Haven to put on it but I ended up buying two other books instead. Kind of scary how easy it is to buy books, but I love it! Enjoy all your new reads!

    1. Thanks for visiting, Staci…I didn’t think I would love my Kindle this much! It’s great how receiving it as a gift forced me to embrace it. I guess I was a little afraid, but now I’m not.

      Enjoy your reading week.

Rescue is a book I’m really curious about. I look forward to reading your thoughts on it! It sounds like a lot of people got e-readers for Christmas. I got mine three months ago for my birthday and just love it. I hope you have a great week.

  7. Thanks for stopping by yesterday – I’m late due to a power outage yesterday but am happy to say I’m sitting in my kitchen this morning and the sun is out! 🙂

Love the books you bought last week (all titles I have read or want to read). I hope you enjoy your Kindle. I have used my Nook just once but hope that will change early January when I hope to find more time to read (run will be done and the puppy is getting older).

    Have a great week!

    1. Yes, I think I will find more and more time for it…but I also have to pay attention to the “print books” on my stacks! Thanks for stopping by, Mari. Sorry about the power failure. I’m wondering how many bloggers were affected by storms throughout the various states/countries, as I’m noticing a scarcity of people showing up in the blogosphere.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Sam…I didn’t explore the Kindle store fully…just grabbed a couple from the first ones that came up that I was wanting to read. One day, I’m going to fully explore that store, and hold onto my hands to keep from clicking away to buy, buy, buy!

I also want to find these free ones I hear people talking about, too.
