MONDAY MEMES — MAILBOX & WHAT ARE YOU READING? — NOV. 8

Welcome to our Monday Memes, where we get together to share about our books.  The ones we’ve received in the mail (or bought), and what we’ve been reading.

Mailbox Monday is hosted this month by Knitting and Sundries.

What Are You Reading? is hosted by Book Journey.

Mailbox Monday:

I received only one book this week—and it was from the Amazon Vine program.

Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter, by Tom Franklin, is a story about two different young men and the experiences that defined them.

From Amazon:

Edgar Award-winning author Tom Franklin returns with his most accomplished and resonant novel so far—an atmospheric drama set in rural Mississippi. In the late 1970s, Larry Ott and Silas “32” Jones were boyhood pals. Their worlds were as different as night and day: Larry, the child of lower-middle-class white parents, and Silas, the son of a poor, single black mother. Yet for a few months the boys stepped outside of their circumstances and shared a special bond. But then tragedy struck: Larry took a girl on a date to a drive-in movie, and she was never heard from again. She was never found and Larry never confessed, but all eyes rested on him as the culprit. The incident shook the county—and perhaps Silas most of all. His friendship with Larry was broken, and then Silas left town.

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading?

Besides my reading this week, I’ve been participating in NaNoWriMo, and have accumulated 16,280 words in seven days. I’m hoping to stockpile those words and pages for that inevitable slump that could appear.

Books Read and Reviewed:

1)  The Lost Hours, by Karen White (review)

2)  Bitter in the Mouth, by Monique Truong (review)

3)  The Shadow Man, by Mary Gordon (review)

Books Coming Up Next:

1)  Outtakes from a Marriage, by Ann Leary

2)  My Best Friend’s Girl, by Dorothy Koomson (from my TBR stack)

3)  Once in a Blue Moon, by Eileen Goudge

The story of the perfect couple living a dream life—until one day….

How far would you go for the best friend who broke your heart?

An emotionally charged family drama, focusing on two sisters and their turbulent lives and loves.

So that’s my week.  Some reading, some blogging, and a lot of writing!

What does your week look like?  I hope you’ll stop by and share....

    1. I agree, Judith…I can’t seem to handle NO books in the mail, though; and on those weeks, I find myself at the bargain counter at B & N…not good for the TBR reduction.

Thanks for stopping by and for the congrats….

    1. Thanks, Kylie…Now I’m really having to strive for that balance. I work best in the morning, which means getting up early to blog so I can write before it’s too late! Then I read later in the day.

    1. Yes, I don’t remember where I first saw it, Kathy, but I know it was on a blog!

I’ll probably read it soon….it’s hard not to do that, but the mailbox ones usually have to wait in line behind others….Thanks for visiting my blog.

    1. Thanks, Julie…I do better with the word count when I can get to it early. But I like to check e-mails and do a bit of blogging first. As long as I start writing by 6:30 or so, I’m good. Then I save later in the day for reading. I’m a real stay-at-home slug these days…LOL

      Thanks for stopping by.

  4. Good work on NaNo! I didn’t get much writing time the first week so I gave up, but at least I have a nice outline ready for when life slows down a bit.

I love the cover of My Best Friend’s Girl!

  5. I think Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter sounds so good. I am so tempted to just go ahead and buy it but my stacks are crazy right now. My Best Friend’s Girl is a good story. I read that quite awhile back and liked it. I hope you enjoy it as well.
