MAILBOX MONDAY

I didn’t receive anything in the mail this week, but I bought this book at Borders.

Once in a Blue Moon, by Eileen Goudge, has been on my wish list for awhile.

Here’s a review from Publishers Weekly on Amazon:

As children, sisters Lindsay and Kerri Ann are shunted into the foster care system after their mother is arrested for selling drugs in Goudge’s (The Diary) charming newest. Lindsay is fortunate enough to be adopted by a loving family, while younger Kerri Ann bounces from family to family, becoming a teenage runaway, getting into drugs and eventually losing custody of her own daughter. Thirty years after they last saw each other, Kerri Ann shows up on Lindsay’s doorstep in a last ditch effort to save herself. Lindsay, of course, has troubles of her own, and her nearly unrecognizable sister turning up is the last thing she needs. The tension in the sisters’ relationship is believable, and while romantic subplots are completely predictable, family dynamics are beautifully handled, particularly between the girls and the woman who tried to save them from foster care, stripper Miss Honi. A touching story with wide appeal, Goudge’s novel is a sharp example of dysfunctional family fiction. (Oct.)

What Are You Reading?

Last Week’s Reads:

1)  The Cloud Chamber, by Joyce Maynard (Click Title for Review)

2)  Body Work, by Sara Paretsky (Click Title for the Review)

Ongoing:

Missing Pieces, by Joy Fielding (the lost book that I’m now waiting to get from the library — almost finished!)

What’s On Deck for this Week:

1)  The New Yorkers, by Cathleen Schine (a graduate of my TBR pile)

A delightful-looking book that centers around an Upper West Side neighborhood and the dogs that bring the owners together.

2)  Baby Proof, by Emily Giffin (Another one from the old TBRs)

A story about what happens after the “I Dos.”   Giffin once again proves she’s one of the best chick-lit writers in this thoughtful, layered, and wholly original story of a woman facing a major choice in her life.

3)  Chosen, by Chandra Hoffman

Some snippets from Amazon:

“A page-turner that rings true. . . . This engrossing read will appeal to fans of domestic fiction luminaries Jodi Picoult, Sue Miller, and Chris Bohjalian.” (Library Journal )

“[Hoffman’s] sparkling debut fully engages the reader with Chloe’s altruistic dreams and the predicament in which she unexpectedly finds herself.” (Booklist )

What did you receive this week?  And what will you be reading?  I hope you’ll stop by and share some comments and links.

  1. Very interesting books! I think the only one I’ve heard of before is “Baby Proof”. Will be posting my current reads as well. For tomorrow. Guess I should get on that, eh? 😉 Thanks for sharing, Laurel-Rain!

  2. I had a slow week too, nothing in the mail. And then I went to a Friends of the Library Sale on Saturday and came home with 9 books. So no catching up for me this week. Enjoy your reading.

    1. Thanks, Sami…glad you could stop by; I agree about the unique twist to this book. Reminds me of another book by this author that had similar unique twists—The Love Letter, which was made into a movie with several well-known actors.

  3. So I’m curious to see what you think of Chosen! You’ll have to let me know when you read it and maybe I can read mine and we can chit chat about it!
Hope you have a wonderful week,

    1. I will probably read that one last this week (Chosen), as I made a promise (to myself!) to first read the two books that have been languishing on my TBR stacks for a really long time!

I’ll let you know when I finish it, Natalie, and thanks for stopping by.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Mari. Yes, I sort of gathered that, but I’m not having any trouble with Baby Proof. It’s moving quickly, although I only read in fits and starts. It’s hard to put down once I start, though!
