MY FAVORITE READS — MARCH 25

My Favorite Reads is a meme hosted weekly by Alyce,  At Home With Books.

As usual, whenever I am trying to decide which of my numerous books to feature, I scan my shelves.  I have shelves everywhere, so the search can take awhile.

So when I stumbled upon this book, one I hadn’t read in awhile, I thought “a-ha!”  Because there is no writer who can pull the reader in more than Joyce Carol Oates.  And with her Blonde, she hits a home run. (Pub. 2000).

Not only is it a truly engaging story, but the made-for-TV movie reminds us all that sometimes, even a movie based on a book can convey everything and then some.

In this Amazon blurb, we learn a little bit more:

Dramatic, provocative and unsettlingly suggestive, Blonde is as much a bombshell as its protagonist, the legendary Marilyn Monroe. Writing in highly charged, impressionistic prose, Oates creates a striking and poignant portrait of the mythic star and the society that made and failed her. In a five-part narrative corresponding to the stages of Monroe’s life, Oates renders the squalid circumstances of Norma Jeane’s upbringing: the damage inflicted by a psychotic mother and the absence of an unknown (and perpetually yearned for) father, and the desolation of four years in an orphanage and betrayal in a foster home. Oates sees Monroe as doomed from the beginning by heredity and fate, and hurried to her death by a combination of cynical Hollywood exploitation, dependence on drugs and flawed choices of lovers and mates: JFK’s cruel manipulation and shadowy intervention is the final blow to her fragile ego and her very existence. It is no surprise when, at the end, Oates subscribes to a controversial theory about Monroe’s demise. Meanwhile, she draws a sharp-eyed picture of Hollywood during the 1940s and ’50s; introduces a cast of movie-town personalities, from actors and agents to producers, directors and studio heads; creates intriguing character sketches of Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller; and conveys a nation’s fascination with a cultural icon. The inevitable drawbacks in a book of this sort–deliberate omission of events, imaginative reconstruction of public and other events from Monroe’s point of view–are problematical but not crucial.   1. It’s got to be really hard for an author to successfully write a fictionalized account of such an iconic figure without offending a few people. I think for me, I would be wondering the whole time which parts were true and which parts the author had fictionalized.

    • I know…and I’m thinking that JCO did it really well. She makes no apologies for the “fictional” aspects, but she keeps them so true to what we all believe about Marilyn that it feels true.

      In fact, we’re left believing that these fictional elements might be true, since those days in Hollywood were so different from nowadays…there was a lot more mystery to the personal lives of the stars.
